The first cabin at Bâlea was built as early as 1883 by the Carpathian Society for the Promotion and Encouragement of Tourism (SKV). It was rebuilt several times throughout history: destroyed by a fire before 1900, then during World War I, rebuilt in 1927, and later demolished in 1972 to make way for the current cabin building.

Bâlea Waterfall Chalet is located on the Transfăgărășan, at the base of the slope, and serves as the starting point for the trail to the waterfall. Bâlea Waterfall is situated a bit further up along the Bâlea River, at an altitude of over 1,200 meters, with a drop of approximately 60 meters, and is considered one of the most beautiful and tallest tiered waterfalls in Romania.

The trail to the waterfall is marked with a red dot and can take approximately 40–60 minutes, depending on each person’s pace. Initially, the path follows the riverbank and then climbs steeply towards the waterfall, being considered easy to moderate in dry conditions.
